Johnny Ray Century Bicycle Ride
September 22, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Date: September 22nd, 2018
Time: 7:00 AM until 4:00 PM
The Johnny Ray Century is sponsored by the Opelika Bicycle Advisory Committee and is an initiative of the East Alabama Cycling Club-the founders of the ride.
Once again, the ride will work with the Davis Phinney Foundation, to support their mission with Parkinson’s.
“A Fall Classic…the 15th annual fully supported charity bike ride benefitting the Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkinson’s. Explore the quiet (but sometimes rough) backroads of the lovely East Alabama countryside on your choice of a 20, 34, 63, or 105 mile route-following the now abandoned 19th century Central of Georgia railroad spur. The 105 mile Century option takes riders into downtown Roanoke where Johnny Ray himself, its famed conductor, is believed buried.” – via the Facebook event
All riders will tour the lightly trafficked rural roads of Lee, Chambers, and Randolph Counties of East Alabama. Riders on the Johnny Ray Metric and Roanoke Express will ride over a World War II-era steel Bailey Bridge and a rare wood truss bridge. Riders on the Roanoke Express have the option to race the historic Johnny Ray train; check out the time tables. Here’s a brief history of the Johnny Ray Train by Winston Smith T.
Road surfaces vary from asphalt to chipseal. The chipseal on Chambers County Road 389 – that five-mile stretch of road from Opelika to Cussetta – is smoother than it was in 2007!
20 miles – Cusseta Commuter
34 miles – Twin Silos Shuttle
63 miles – Lafayette Short Line
105 miles – Johnny Ray Century
